[MittleiderMethodGardening] Re: Struck by the Reality that Eating Vegetables is Most Healthy!

Hi Mr. Kennard, and ALL:

Longevity and what we can do to achieve it, is a great topic! And yes, National Geographic, back in 2005, did a wonderful article on three locations on earth which seemed to have some of the longest-lived people: Okinawa,Japan... Sardinia,Italy... and Loma Linda, California (home to many Seventh-day Adventists). A book was written in response to the research this author did, called Blue Zones.

I, myself, am a Seventh-day Adventist. Wasn't Mittleider a Seventh-day Adventist, as well? Here are a couple links to a short video clip that National Geographic did along with their longevity magazine article, in 2005, on all three of the locations of longevity which they looked at... it is short. I think you'll have to copy and paste these addresses into your browser, but it is very worth it... so interesting!:

According to this National Geographic article, the SDA group is the only one of the three which is continuing to keep that longevity factor...the other two are declining...Anyway, there has been numerous research done with SDAs to try to discover why they live so long, so that it can be used to help others who would like to learn how to live, healthfully & independently, as long as possible.

There is one long-term study being done right now (has been going on since 2001, of which my husband and I are participants) by Loma Linda U in Loma Linda, California, and funded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health, which is a much larger study..they were shooting for 125,000 participants (one of the largest long-term studies ever done in the United States).. don't know if they got quite that many or not. We keep getting surveys every year or so with a different emphasis each time... besides health practices, it includes things like spirituality and its impact, as well. You can read a brief overview of these studies along with some very practical recommendations made as a result of these studies by going to this website:

Now...since all of us in this group must be interested in eating lots of healthy veges and fruit :P I know I am preaching to the choir! lol!

One last thing... I think I just recently posted this website, but I'll do it here again, since it is a wonderful treasure... It's a magazine called Vibrant Life, and it has several years worth of archive articles you can read for free! All about the health principles discovered in these studies with recipes as well! Hope you'll go check it out!:

( And here is where you can order, for only $2.50 ea, Vibrant Life's special edition on Longevity, and some other health related special issues you may not be able to find on their website:

BTW, it's great to be a part of this yahoo group! And "Thanks!" to Mr. Jim Kennard for creating it to help us all be more proficient at growing our own healthy food! :D

Happy Autumn!
