You get 0.433* psi for each foot of "head" in the water column. Thus, if you need 30 psi at the faucet, then a "head" of 69.28 feet would be required. (30 psi divided by 0.433 = 69.28 feet) For 40 psi at the faucet, a head of 92.38 feet would be required.

A storage tank will completely drain into any size/length of pipe with one inch of head -- gravity simply works at any positive head! Higher heads will cause the tank to empty faster than lower heads will through the same size/length of pipe.

For gravity drain irrigation systems, lower pressures are desirable in terms of possible soil erosion in the grow bed. Higher pressures are indicated when you want to finish the irrigation job FASTER.

A water head of ten (10) feet should be more than adequate for a gravity powered irrigation system using 60 feet of 3/4" PVC pipe in the grow beds.

Hope this helps!

Best Regards

Craig Ridge

* Precisely accurate only at a water temperature of 62° F; however, 0.433 will be close enough for practical purposes at any water temperature likely to be encountered in gardening.
