[MittleiderMethodGardening] Don't give up!

Renie,

I feel with you. But, if we were ONLY into gardening for the FOOD, then
maybe we could rely on grocery stores and farmers markets.
For many though (including myself) it means so much more. I count it a
privilege to have the knowlege on how to grow, maintain and care for a
garden. About 8 yrs ago we as a family were in the situations where we had
very little income and the only food my family had, while I was in a
different part of a country starting a new job, was coming from our own
Mittleider garden. I've learnt first-hand the importance of being
self-relient, and not to be a burden on someone else.

Not many of the rising generation has the skills to grow and preserve
their own food. Then when calamities are upon us (natural disasters, war,
transport stikes etc), what have they got to rely on - especially when
money won't be of much value when you can't buy anything with it.

Your mentioning of the our endless battle with the critters remind me of
God's words to Adam about the earth being cursed and bringing forth thorns
and briars ... and we having to do things by the sweat of our brow! Yet
we have been given a mandate to subdue these elements. By following all
the basic rules for growing a weed-free, stress-free, healthy garden most
pests and diseases can be controlled. But you have to be diligent - most
problems I've discovered in my garden could be traced to something I've
done wrong or didn't understand properly. Start off with one of Dr.
Mittleider books in your hand when you start a garden and many of the
problems will be sorted out - he's been through every problem you can
think of. There are a few really simple basics that will take you most of
the way - and some others that will make a good garden even better. Stick
with the correct principles!

As for pests, e.g. flying insects, coming in from outside; there are now
many biological control agents available that disturb the growth cycle of
insects. Believe me, sometimes I am also with my hands in my hair - but I
see it as a learning curve and a challenge. If you have lots of
challenges, just start small and learn to manage what you have, then as
your confidence and knowlege grow you'll make it!

Don't give up!
