Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] What could I have done?
I have a sure cure you guys. Just don't grow corn. LOL
Sorry, I could not resist that one.
Seriously, the corn ear worm is a problem in our community garden. Every
ear of corn grown has a worm. I stopped growing it because of this.
Those that do grow corn merely chop off the end of the ear where the worm is.
Of course, if you are a grower, I don't think people would buy your corn.
Since the corn ear worm is also like the cabbage worm, the tomato fruit
worm and the bud worm that devastates geraniums, how about trying to spray
that corn with BT,
Bacillus Thurgienisis? It is safe to use. But then, in retrospect, the
worm would have to be there to devour it and then die and the damage will
already have been done.
There goes that idea. I hope you find a way to solve this problem. I
would like to hear it when you do.

I have been searching the net for corn ear worm control. an article on
cotton bowievels caught my interest. Same bug different crop. The guy spays
his cotton with garlic spray and is so happy he has expanded. I don't know if
the smell throws them off.? He sprays several times at certain stages. I
am going to give it a go? I happen to like garlic but I hope it does effect
the taste of the corn.

I can not wait to hear this one! I have 600+ stocks just starting to silk,
I do not see my self keeping track and oiling everyone of them

Bruce & Group:
I have successfully prevented corn ear worms by dusting the silks with
Diazanon.
It doesn't seem to be available lately - probably someone has outlawed it.
Anyone else know something to replace it?
