[MittleiderMethodGardening] Missionaries in Uganda, Africa

Jim
Rand and I enjoy getting your emails down here in Uganda. We've been on our mission now for just over a month. While at the MTC in Provo Pres. Squires who is head of the Benson Food Iniative here in Africa met us for an evening to tell us what he had started here in Uganda. We have seen some of the gardens the couple missionaries have started and have heard that there are some proposals that some of the members are trying to get help with but haven't been here long enough to get familiar with them or how that is going.

From what little we've learned the ground is pretty depleted of nutrients. That is not new where we come from but not sure that the members could afford to purchase even the NPK. We haven't seen any epsom salts but that doesn't mean there isn't some somewhere. We brought one bag of trace minerals and thought we would try some pot (vegetables that is - JK) growing as we live in a second story apartment with a lovely balcony.

We've noticed as we've traveled through the mission that they grow corn stalks about every two feet apart. In between that they grow soy beans. Rand says the beans are a legume that would replenish the nitrogen in the soil so the corn will have more to use.

One thing they have done to water during the drought season is to get a 2 quart pop containers. They put several holes in the bottom, fill it with water and put the cap on. Then it is buried so it sits close to the roots of the plants. When they want to water the plant they unscrew the top so the water can drip out. They have some sort of circle garden with the center built up. The plants are around the periphery of the circle in a ditch along with the pop containers. We've only had it described to us and hope to see one soon.

We're interested in what you've seen done in an area where the season are rain, drought, rain, drought and the people are extremely poor. (Plants must have water, so we make sure there is a source of water for the season in which we plan to grow crops - JK)

Thanks
Julie
