One of the things I discovered about growing corn out here in windy West Texas was that by watering it too much the roots didn't develop the depth needed to support tall stalks of corn. Corn needs lots of water but by watering less often but intensively the roots would grow deeper seeking that moisture and thus were better able to support the corn. Learned that after a windstorm when I discovered much of the corn had simply been uprooted and blew away.
