Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] grow box sawdust
I suspect (!) that you can mitigate the extreme finness kf the sawdust. What woukd it cause? Lack if air for the roots. Solutions? Add vemiculite and esp perlite, with perhaps a bit of coarse sharp sand. (I think this is #2, aka, sandbox sand.) I see no issue with "some" wood chips. Jim and others can be more precise in mix ratios. I might say that 50% fine sawdust may be found to be a maximum percentage, purely off the cuff, with 33% being safer.
If you mix a gallon of each mix in a bucket and moisten, use the SAME AMOUNT if water in each, treat it as if you potted a plant, then tip the 2 samples over a day later, grab a handful and squeeze, you will sense the answer to ratios.
Roots need air, too. Almost no water at all should emerge. But it must still be friable - the hand-squeeze should fall somewhat apart when poked with a finger.
