Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] sweet potatoes
Greetings Everyone,
I use the Mittleider method in both the USA and in The Philippines.
When we are in The Philippines we plant a lot of sweet potatoes.
We are told that if we pick the tops that the roots will not grow.
I guess the roots did not get the word, as after a class 5 typhoon
went over our farm, our power was knocked and our garden. We
went out to the garden and floating in the water were many huge
sweet potatoes.
We frequently pick the tips or tops of the sweet potato vines.
It takes a big pot of the tops to make a meal as they cook down a
great deal. We love the tops cooked like you would cook fresh
spinach. We serve the tops topped with sprinkled cheese and vinegar
on the side. We have sweet potato tops about twice a week. Very nice
dish and very cheap. I planted an area of about 20 x 4 foot and had
enough plants to provide a side dish for our family twice a week for months
on end. Of course the Islands of Paradise are tropical and we never get
cold weather. I thought I would suggest this way of harvesting the
vegetable and using all the plant.
Blessings,
JJ++

Others have told me that the vines that sprout roots need to be in the soil as that forms another potato. So I would say no.
Google it.
