Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Help with formula for pre-plant

I'm new to this group, but I think I have something to add that might be helpful.

It's very difficult to hand mix 50 pounds of powders and make a homogenous mix.

And yet, the formula is what makes the Mittleider method. If you don't mix it well enough, the plants won't get the benefit of all that work and research.

I'll assume you have your scale, and follow the 2.5 pounds Epsom (that's 40 ounces) plus 10 ounces Borax.

First,  mix together the Epsom and Borax, thoroughly, (even maybe with a whisk) and you have 50 ounces.

Happily, that means for every pound of Gypsum, you need one ounce of your mixture to go into one pound of Gypsum.

Then I would suggest starting your mixing maybe with one pound Gypsum and one ounce Epsom/Borax.   See how that goes and maybe increase to 5 pounds of Gypsum at a time, and 5 ounces of the Epson/Borax.  And stir it more than you think you need to.

And good luck!

Group:  I appreciate Laurie's perspective on this.  However, our experience over the past 35 years has been that thorough mixing and placing in a 5 gallon bucket is adequate.  Occasional "mixing" with the 16 ounce can being used for applying the fertilizer is all that is needed.
