[MittleiderMethodGardening] Most Questions Are Answered In The Mittleider Gardening Course Book - Study the RECIPE!

Group:

Following is a post I received today from someone just getting started, followed by my answers to the man's questions.  It illustrates how easy it is to make mistakes if you do not follow the instructions meticulously.  Hopefully we caught it in time to same this good man some real grief - and problems:

"I purchased the Mittleider Garden Book a couple of weeks and have almost read it through. I know you're loaded at this time of year, but I need to ask one question. In lesson 16 the drawings indicate a grow bed with two grow rows paralleling the sides of the grow box. In this section it shows one water line placed in the middle of the grow bed. With the 1/16th holes drilled every 4" at the 3-6-9 position on the pipe, one would assume that full watering will be accomplished across the full width (4') of the bed. LDSPrepper and one or two others show in there videos two water lines positioned directly above the plant row. Is this something the
they have decided or does it have value? Maybe two questions. How do you gauge the amount of water required.....How frequent and etc?
Would appreciate your help."

(My response)
Several items have been misunderstood.
1) The soil-beds or Grow-Boxes talked about in the Gardening Course book are 18" wide.  (Instructions would be different for 4'-wide boxes)

2) Holes are drilled in the pipe using a #57 drill bit.  This is very important.  It is a "wire bit", and can be purchased online or at hobby shops and Ace Hardware stores.  Online is much cheaper than the other alternatives.  Do NOT us a 1/16th inch bit!

3) The holes are drilled at 12 o'clock, 1:30 and 3:00, constituting a total of 90 degrees - NOT the 180 degrees you stated.

4) LDS Prepper does everything under my instruction, and his videos are excellent sources of instruction.  The Gardening course book simply did not address 4'-wide boxes.

5) Water until you see water seeping out from the bottom of the box.

6) water as frequently as needed to maintain moisture in the soil at the root zone.  In cold cloudy weather it can be less frequent, but in warm/hot sunny days probably every day, and in extremes even twice per day may be important.  Purchase an inexpensive moisture probe.  This will help you figure out what is needed for your garden.
