RE: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Mosquito problem
Teri, This may sound crazy, but it works for me. I built a shallow pond for
water lilies and other pond plants. Now I have had a mosquito problem like
yours. They swarmed on my patio. They would be all over my laundry when it
was dry and I wanted to take it in. Of course I was enveloped in so many
mosquitoes it was horrible. Before long the pond was full of larval and
pupal mosquitoes of all sizes. Instead of goldfish, which don't do a very
good job, I put in 4 blue gouramies and two paradise fish. In a few days
the clouds of mosquito larvae went to an occasion one here and there. After
a full week I couldn't find any more mosquitoes, and soon, I noticed there
were very few blood suckers flying around or resting on my hung-out laundry.
The only thing is, when the water temp starts dropping much below 70, I have
to take them inside or they will die. As for now, they are so beautiful and
are busy making babies in the pond. I hand feed them flake food, as the
natural food is pretty scarce. Now, instead of hiding, they come to me as
soon as I show up at the pond, It's kind of cool, the way they all come,
begging, and I no longer am battling mosquitoes. I love it! Also, I put in
a pond at a prior house we lived in. We had flies. I tried sprays, strips
and baits, all to no avail. The traps killed thousands of flies. But for
every one it killed, it seemed to attract four more from the neighbors'
yard. Then I added frogs to the pond. Little by little, the fly population
went down, until they weren't a problem any more., We still got occasional
flies from the neighborhood, but they didn't last long, either flying away,
or being eaten. Bernie

Subject: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Mosquito problem
I was reading this old post about getting rid of slugs, as they sometimes
are a big problem in my garden, but there is no way I can go out at night to
pick them, as I seem to be a mosquito magnet! My husband and brother are
smokers, and mosquitos don't seem to bother them. I am not a smoker, and If
I step out at night or early morning, they seem to flock to me. Sometimes
even during the middle of the day, they are after me. I have tried that
"Mosquito" plant, let me tell you, it doesn't work. I have tried the torches
even with the "Mosquito" fuel, and it doesn't work. I hate to have to spray
the Deet on me, and sometimes even with that, I get bit. I try and make sure
there is no standing water in my yard, but I don't always have time to dump
everything. Anyone have any other ideas on how to repel Mosquitos? Thanks.
Teri P.

Hi
Using bread as an attractant works, for me, even better than beer. The only
problem is having to go hand-collect them, dusk and later, aided by a
flashlight. But bread is safe for pets, wildlife, and soil, (and I can
safely feed slug-ingested bread to my ducks and chickens). Sluggo and beer
get expensive, but the tradeoff for using bread is investing time. I count
it as spending more time in the garden - it lets me see what's going on at
night.
One thought: collecting is easier with a strap-on head light to keep hands
free.
Happy hunting!
