Re: [Organic_Gardening] Veggie Starter Pots

Aaaaah a do it your selfer huh? Well......

First yo are going to need to raid the compost pile and get some screen like 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Gently sift the compost onto a large cookie sheet then remove worms and any other critters. Next place it in and oven set at about 200 degrees and allow to dry out for about 90 minutes. Next you are going to need some sand. Now the dry compost may have some pathogens that would cause fungus's to show up so I put my soil into a big bowl and microwave it for about a minute and that ends that threat. Finally on the compost I went to a thrift store and bought a food processor and ran the soil through that and that made it a lot finer and then I also used the food processor to blend in the sand. Then I put all of it into a plastic bucket with a lid for storage until I need it. A 5 gallon bucket equals about 1.5 cubic feet of soil.

Now for fertilizer you will need to take the foot of a pair of Nylon stockings/panty hose. I like fresh horse manure my self it is less likely to burn leaves, but rabbit or cow will do also. Pack the foot of the sock with the pooh and knot it off and attach about 10 inches of string to it and the other end to something that floats. I use a 2 inch fish bobber. This is so if the line falls into the soup you don't have to stick your hand into it to fish it out. Then take a five gallon bucket with a lid and place the stuffed sock into it and fill with water. Put the bucket some place where it is sunny and for the first 5 or 6 days come out and work the sock like a tea bag for that is what you are creating a manure tea. As the water in the buck diminishes just add some more the tea bag will be good for about 2 months. On a side note if you have roses and they get black spot or powdery mildew use the tea on the leaves it will resolve the problem and feed the
roses at the same time.

So there you are Linda, AVAST!!!have at thee....arrgh

Thanks Jeff.

I want to do this myself without a mix. Has anyone done their own starter
mix?
And does anyone make their own liquid fertilizer for starter plants?

I'm hoping so....
