Re: [Organic_Gardening] Raccoons: They Will Be Among The Last to Leave

Okay folks Reality check here:

Just remember Raccoons as cute as they are, are related to the BEARS. Except they live in large communities. They will eat your pets food and your pets. They will nest in your attic and under your house for generations.Raccoons are highly susceptible to Rabies and they are territorial and if they see you as a threat or and intruder they will attack in mass. Raccoons can reach the size of a medium size dog and they breed twice a year with two to 4 kits per batch. In the city you are not allowed to shoot them with a gun and there are not a lot of predators to manage their population because we don't like Mountain Lions and Wolves in our cities. Raccoons are Omnivores they will devour your garden and the chickens. They will also target small children. They are wild animals treat them as such. Many of the attacks on humans is that they treat them as Walt Disney has portrayed them as if you can actually carry on a conversation with them......time for a reality
check. You as a human irregardless of your mental capabilities are just another viable source of protein and lets see; you don't have claws or thick skin or sharp teeth and you don't run very fast and some of you are fleshier than others but all in all and easy kill. Even Tarazan carried a knife. So lets not all get emotional about the outward appearance or what narrators of the outdoor shows say. There is also one more thing you might want to consider since these cute little critters are like us in that we are low on the food chain that those who like to eat them are attracted to where they congregate and might be sizing you up instead of them.

In the city you will have to pay for a critter control outfit which in my town amounts to about $80 per animal and if you have a family or two that can mount up quickly. Oh and if you have been supplementing their diet with pet food stop. and make sure the doors and windows and pet doors are shut for they will come looking for you. You may have to make the call to animal control or the Critter guys so keep their numbers on speed dial. DO NOT TRY TO SHOO THEM AWAY. They will take this as and attack and will make short work of you....

We live in the city and I am always amazed at how many of these critters there are per square mile. We find them, along with rabbits, in our garden all the time. They don't really seem to do any damage, unlike the rabbits. We do not raise corn or the story might have been different. Anyway, I did some research and put an article together that I've published elsewhere, but I thought members here might enjoy learning more about the animals we often see on an everyday basis, especially if you are out and about at night. The site has some ads on it but is virus free. I hope you read and enjoy the article. Thanks. - Woody -
