Hi Daisy from the great white North...
Google lasagna garden, I put mine on top of an old gravel RV parking pad and while it is taken a couple of years It seems to have started breaking up the compacted crud that was there. It gets attacked from two sides above and below and the compost, soil, leaves, straw etc that goes into it seems to work really well for veg. And the worms and stuff start bashing through the compaction to get to the goodies up top
