[MittleiderMethodGardening] Seedling for the fall
I am ready to start few plants from seeds in trays and pots for the fall garden because my summer garden is still growing well so i don t have room to plant seeds directly in the garden.... I have few questions...
1- I have lots of sawdust ...can I replace peat moss with sawdust?
2- can I start sweet corn in trays or it is better to sow it directly in the ground?
3-Can I start carrots, beets and salads greens in trays or it will be hard to transplant them?
4-beside the big plants like broccoli, tomatoes, pepper, cauliflowers that i know I can transplant later what can I start from seeds in pots ?
For the people that are not familiar with Az the fall garden is the typical spring summer garden for the rest of USA =]

Yes, you can definitely replace peat moss with sawdust. Just make sure it is NOT walnut.
It is a great way to grow corn - starting it in flats or trays and planting into the garden when it's 4-6" tall. This saves days in the garden and eliminates losses from birds, etc.
Carrots, beets, and other root crops are NOT good to start in the greenhouse. They do not transplant well. Salad greens transplant, but are tender, and should be transplanted when young, removing a couple of leaves, and mitigating the heat as much as possible, so the tender leaves don't wilt and die.
You CAN start almost anything from seeds, but some crops are best when planted directly into the garden - depending on the garden temperatures, etc.
See the schedule Garden Planting Details in the Files Section in the James Gledhill folder.
