Mine did that one year. I was told (by a fella that'd been gardening longer than the combined ages of my 4 person household) the following:

1. It's blossom end rot, just like on tomatoes and squash
2. It's a calcium deficiency
Action steps to cure:
3. Water more frequently (like twice as often as I was)
4. Add more calcium to the soil
5. Dispose of veggies that are infected (I don't know if that means it's catchy but why take the chance)
