RE: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Thistle

Going back to my past on the farm with potatoes and grain we controlled
Canadian Thistle with cultivation (hoe in the garden) and 2-4d in grain.
Roundup will only kill what it touches, so if carefully applied it will only
kill the thistles (use a barrier and/or a small low pressure stream of
solution directed only at the weeds). 2-4d will kill any broad leaf plant
so must be used with extreme care and cannot be used over 80 degrees F as it
will vaporize and move. I wouldn't use it in an established garden. If you
remove Canadian Thistles with a hoe using the E&O method they will soon be
gone. I have found the same with Field Bind Weed. It is almost eradicated
on my 2/3 acre lot using Roundup, Round up mixed with 2-4d and cultivation.
Bull thistles and other such varieties are a bi-annual. If they are cut off
at the tap root, they will be gone. A mix of Round up and 2-4d also will
kill them if done early in the spring before they mature. I have used 2-4d
alone to control thistles on a neighboring property (vacant) with a nasty
infestation and doesn't kill native grasses.

Good Luck

Blair

Anyone have luck irradicating thistle from the vegetable garden??
Would it be safe to use any weaker solutions of something such as Round Up?
