Try your local farm feed & bulk seed store.  I bought bags about the size of a 55 gal drum for roughly $10 each.  That was 5 years ago and it's produced 50 miles from my house so your price may be higher--but it will be a whole lot cheaper than Lowes/Menards/Home Depot.  Same for perlite but it was double the price.

No. Not always. Nowadays insulative vermiculite, despite being inert, itself, can tend to have fire retardants and miticides on it. Call the mfr and or read the MSDS from that specific company. Ask very pointedly, and don't say, it's for your garden.

I think you may be talking about vermiculite.  You can buy this cheaper in the insulation section only at Menards.  It is called Vermiculite insulation by

? Sungro ? but it is 2/3 more in quantity for the same thing that is sold in the garden sections..  Same product two different applications.

The Home Depot stuff says "white blend." I would think that the word blend indicates there is other stuff mixed in w the gypsum.
