Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Grow box and medium questions
hi bob, my name is barbara, and when we lived in GA, we built a wood and glass greenhouse with the grow boxes inside. I don't know if it was pressure treated. The guys built an underground watering system that came up inside the greenhouse for the daily watering and feeding. We got all the sawdust free in GA, bc a very nice man manufactured pallets, (and you cannot use certain types of wood),i would mix 1/3 fresh sterile soil, my husband would spread this out. Then we would go to the feed store as we were out in the country, and bought Giant bags of vermiculite, and i think we added something else, but lots of vermiculite or perlite will keep the soil damp longer, and not rot the roots..... of course, we mixed all the sawdust and vermiculite together . O, the greenhouse had an exhaust fan that would come on if the temp. went up to 88 degrees all day. (i would use the poly propelyne stuff if we could ever get this great chance again. Not glass, as it got real cold in 2014, snowed a little, and 2 of the glass panels broke. O, we had a door on it that was screen at the top half and solid at the bottom.Hope this helps a little, God really blessed us, after months of research with Mittleider; the hardest thing to do is get the 16-16-16 fertilizer, and mix with the Mittleider nutrients. i fed 1 x week, put a cotton work glove at the end of the hose, and after i set down the perfect amount of fertilizer, i would slowly drag that glove along the beds (had 2 irrigation systems for the 2 beds, maybe 12 feet long. We transferred alot outside, but the critters always came, and we put up another fence, and then the birds ate the stuff. That was disappointing, but live and learn. My name is Barbara Anne on FB, and the photo at the top IS our greenhouse there. i miss it, but we moved back to florida and have 500 aircraft of students a day flying 200 feet over my roof for 2 and a half years, had a stroke, and just need God's Strength to be able to organize and get rid of everything and get out of here, this state is INSANE and loaded with the virus. When we first moved up from S. Florida in 2003, it was beautiful, a safe haven, only 19,000 population, preserves everywhere, and now, it's like a giant metropolitan dirty city, they try to 'keep the outside of things' looking nice for the tourists, yikes, got to get away from 14-18 hours per day of this constant duration of students from all over the world flying in here, 500 feet from our backyard are the runways....Might have to buy the updated version of the manual, i bought the newer one, too, but some of the old one is good. Check Jim's website, Food for everyone, i think, and see. Be sure to get your seeds from Non gmo, MountainValleyseeds are the best, and in mylar bags, or they were then, and i have bags of them in gamma sealed 5 lb. bucket for whenever we're able to begin again at our old ages....Take care, email is barbarasetfree@gmail.comJust got home from emergency 2 procedures, bleeding ulcer, both ends, gosh, life is hard in what used to be called our Golden Years....barbaraOn Tue, Mar 24, 2020 at 9:53 AM Nika drbob02@yahoo.com [MittleiderMethodGardening] <MittleiderMethodGardening@yahoogroups.com> wrote:Can somebody please help me out? I am trying, after several years of being part of this group, to really put together my first garden.
I have purchased both the book and my online manuals however, I cannot seem to locate either of them right now!
I actually don't even know if this post will be able to hit our board, since I'm not sure if this yahoo group still exists.
my two biggest questions right now are if it is OK to use below ground pressure treated timber in order to build my grow boxes. I plan on building some of the 4 foot boxes and a couple of the 18 inch boxes.
My second question is, since I don't have ready access to any sawdust, what other recommended soil substrates have been put forth. I have used coconut choir with Pete Moss and vermiculite in the past, with varying degrees of success. Additional guidance as to some of the cheaper forms to use would be nice as well since I'm planning on building most of these around 30 feet long.
Thank you so much for the feedback!
Bob
