Re: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Diatomaceous Earth aka Food Grade DE

Okay, I have nothing against the use of DE in the garden, however there have
been studies where horses that had been dewormed using DE having a high
parasite load in their fecal sampling compared to horses wormed by
conventional methods. A friend of mine had called me in hysterics because
her horse was wormy and the vet advised her to do the Panacur Purge. She
had been deworming regularly with a DE paste product. She didn't want to do
the chemicals, but if she didn't she'd still have a wormy horse. She's in a
boarding situation so proper manure control is not possible.

Also, DE can also lead to silicosis if inhaled in large quantities. There's
an area near Carmel Valley, CA which has had problems with horses coming
down with silicosis due to siliaceous chert deposits. Diatoms have a
siliceous shell.

I use a tincture of black walnut hulls or wormwood for my own parasite
control. DE does not work in damp and wet environments, and guess what, if
you ingest it, it goes into a damp and wet environment.
