[Organic_Gardening] Re: Intro and composting question
A.K.
Leaves are the best catalyst for successful composting so you should start soon piling and mixing with weed free grass clippings. I say weed free because the biggie mistake is thinking `my compost will heat up and kill all the weed seeds'.
Ideally this is 90% true, but especially in these pre-winter months it's probably not going to happen.
Compost begets compost is a help and many gardeners will layer finished compost in with newer materials. Smaller is better, corn stalks and tomato vines will still be there 6 months from now if not shredded.
Your chickens will help greatly to speed things up, alfalfa, earthworms etc. If you make cider apple pumice is great,
kitchen waste including coffee grounds is good. I prefer a composter with a lid, but then I have to water sometimes. A simple square chicken wire fencing with one side removable for shoveling is a good starter bin for the budget conscience.
If it's turned and kept moist with simple ingredients it will break down, that's all there is to it.
