[MittleiderMethodGardening] Storage Garden Seeds - What's the Best Buy?
Group:
I get invitations to buy Heirloom Garden Seeds for storage fairly often.
Today I compared the can of seeds we sell with one of the most vigorously "touted" cans on the market - the one with the name that sounds as if it - all by itself - is going to save your family from sure disaster and starvation. It costs $150 and represents that it will plant an acre of garden, with 22 varieties of vegetables and 10,055 seeds.
I calculated how much it would plant using the Mittleider Method and found that it would plant 72 beds, or less than 1/3 of an acre (254 18" X 30' beds per acre).
Then I compared varieties and seed quantities with the Mountain Valley Seed Company can of heirloom seeds, which the Food For Everyone Foundation sells for $39.95, and MVSeeds.com sells for $55.00. Our can of seeds has about 21,000 seeds, and will plant 172 beds, or 2/3rds of an acre.
The other can has cantaloupe, eggplant, jalapeno peppers, and more varieties of corn, lettuce, and beans than we do, and they do NOT have zucchini, which we DO have. And I like several MVSeeds varieties better than ones the other company uses, such as corn, cucumbers, lettuce, onion, peas, radishes, and tomato.
On balance I believe the MVSeeds.com can of seeds is worth MORE than the other one, and I HIGHLY recommend everyone who feels any inclination toward storing for future uncertainties get at least one can of this NOW.
By the way, I believe you can still save 10% plus shipping if you go to mvseeds.com and click on Group Purchases, then type in drprep. They promised us two weeks for the special, so it will likely end this week-end.
