[Organic_Gardening] SEEDS OF CHANGE FARM CLOSURE

There has been a lot of brouhaha going around in the seed industry at the recently announced closure of two Seeds of Change farm operations in New Mexico. They will continue their retail sales and other seed production efforts. Since Seeds of Change was purchased by the Mars Corporation in 1999, they have been losing money. Principles blame it on a loophole in federal regulations that allow growers to purchase non-organic seed (non-treated) if they can't locate organic seed from three different sources. While Seeds Trust President Bill McDorman insists we move toward organic seed production, he has a different take on the diversity issue which is just as important. We need an agriculture that is both organic and diverse. Forcing certified organic gardeners and farmers to narrow their choices to buy certified organic seeds is a flawed, if not dangerous strategy while the vast majority of the world's remaining diversity is not yet certified organic. For a real eye opener see Bill's You Tube video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nys_VdVR_n4
