I have used these for a couple of decades. Milk/juice jugs or even plastic soda pop bottles work fine.
 
Use bait according to what you are trying to trap. 
 
 I like a little piece of fish for flies but U can use a piece of fruit for fruit eating insects or whatever suits your purpose.
