[MittleiderMethodGardening] Control of Virus on Squash Plants - by PathaJ

Our community garden, 300 garden plots, is experiencing an epidemic of viruses on all of our squash plants. Symptoms include, stunted growth, yellow and green mottled leaves, misshapen fruit.
When we realized that almost all gardens had infected plants, we sought the help of plant pathologists and yesterday received the information as to what to do.

I thought I would pass it on just in case you should happen to experience this. I do realize that the potential for something happening like this is more likely to happen in a community garden due to the close proximity of the garden plots.

The first thing you have to do is pull out the infected plants.
Amazingly, you can replant in the same spot, immediately but preferably with seeds. Plants that you bring in from the nursery just may be carrying the virus.
Since the virus is carried from plant to plant via aphids and other insects, control your aphids, ants and any other undesirable bugs.
The host plants for the virus are weeds!!!!! So a nice clean garden is desirable as a preventive measure.

Finally, if you allow the virus infected squash plants to remain in your garden, the virus will spread to the roots.

If you do not removed the infected squash, you will probably have a difficult time growing squash again.

We are in the middle of removing all virus infected squash from all gardens. What a job!!!!

If in doubt as to what the virus looks like, go to google, hit the image button and type in
"virus on squash"
