[MittleiderMethodGardening] grow bed ratio

got access to a large supply of 9" x 7" at a great price. going to make a 48" grow box out of some of them. since they are so large and will last 20 years planning to spend some extra money on the grow mix I put in these boxes.

you call for 3 to 1 sawdust to sand which would be 66.6% sawdust to 33.3% sawdust. also saw on a video where you said some perlite or rice hulls would be a good addition. live in deep south (north mississippi) if it matters.

Planning to use perlite which is expensive but considering how long these may las,t not a bad investment for the time I will use the grow mix. My question is if I add perlite to the sawdust and sand, what should be the correct ratio of sawdust, sand, and perlite.

This is my first grow box as I use the mittleiter method for soil boxes and have been pleased with the results. just do my gardening for some food and as a hobby and decided to try a grow box and see how it does. will be using it for only tomatoes this year.

will be ordering later today the master gardner cd and some more of the micro nutrient as down to my last pack. ordered the hoe last year and love it. also have the gardening course book and refer to it all the time.

Thanks for your help

George Group:

The 9" X 7" lumber will work fine  It just takes some walking space from your aisles.

I like perlite if it's available and not too expensive.  several other materials also work, including peat moss, rice hulls, coffee HULLS (Not grinds), pine needles, coconut coir, etc.  I use about 30-35% sand by volume.

If you get the Garden Master CD - when it asks you to Register, simply type in   master1   and you will have access to all of the books and manuals.
