[MittleiderMethodGardening] spacing plants to prevent cross pollination of plants

Hi all

Last year while hanging out at the local farmers market I came to the realization that I need to bring a greater variety of tomatoes, peppers, and corn.  Space should not be a problem with 2/3 of an acre in cultivation.

Big question; what kind of spacing should I use to keep cross pollination from accuring? In the past I've had success by doing things like separating Bradley and paste tomatoes with a row of pole beans, but with the number of varieties I'm looking at (6 tomato,6 pepper, 5 corn) I need to find additional methods.  I'm really  concerned about my south American  corn being contaminated with the silver king and golden queen (a must have here in the south).

Any help would be appreciated.

preventing cross pollination can be important, and depending on the crop it can be simple or very difficult.  Tomatoes are self-pollinated (perfect plant, with both male and female parts in the same flower, tiny flower and those parts very close together) and USUALLY not a lot of cross-pollination occurs in the backyard garden.  However, to avoid ANY crossing you would need to keep the pollinators from visiting both sets of plants ie keep them totally isolated.

Corn is much different.  It is still "one house", meaning that the same PLANT has both male and female parts, but the tassels carry the pollen and the silk is the receptive female part.  And because the pollen travels on the air quite a distance to reach the silk it can very easily be carried to adjacent plants, and even to plants at quite some distance away.  Therefore, to avoid crossing you need to grow the different varieties at different TIMES, so that they are not receptive when pollen from another variety might be in the air.  That cannot be done with tomatoes because they are continuously fruiting throughout the season (indeterminates).
