[MittleiderMethodGardening] Re: Stink bugs
I'm new here, reading through past threads.
For squirrels, those live traps work great. As Bryon said baiting with peanut butter works like a charm. I know lots of people relocate them, PLEASE don't! That's like letting your dog poop in somebody else's yard & leaving it there. If you do not want to shoot them, here's a very simple alternative. Take the trap and put it into a pan or bucket deep enough to completely submerge it. I keep a 55 gallon barrel full for this (not for squirrels, but mostly for raccoons). And do not buy the cheap Tractor Supply traps, they simply get destroyed by larger pests. A friend bought one and the first raccoon he trapped destroyed the trap & left it. He borrowed my old trap & caught nearly 40 coons over the following two months. You can find better quality traps at your local feed store.
My father-in-law a couple of years ago was doing the trap & release at the local park. My MIL said the squirrels were beating him home! Remember that squirrels are part of the rodent family. You'll do everyone a favor by drowning them. Oh, and don't dunk them for a few minutes & take it out... I've seen guys do that & later realize the critters miraculously revived! Nope, my deal with racoons & such is that if they can hold their breath for an hour, I'll let them go free.
For squirrels, I usually just shoot them with a 22. My dog loves it, that means he's having fresh squirrel for dinner. If you have ever had to pay for the significant damage squirrels can do (I've seen it turn into thousands of dollars in repairs), you will have no problem taking them out.
Great forum, I look forward to learning lots here.
