I use torpedo sand and you're correct, it is very coarse, but that is what you want for proper drainage.  I went to a dirt yard and purchased 1 cubic yard of torpedo sand and mixed it in with very fine sawdust in a 25% to 75% ratio respectively. and was able to fill in 5 beds that measured 18" wide, 8' long and 10" deep.
