[MittleiderMethodGardening] Re: Automated watering - Soaker Hoses or Mittleider-style PVC System
In the past I have used soaker hoses. I was wondering what to do with the
PVC pipes for the winter in zone 4. Do I have to dig them up every year?

Only the Main water source pipe is buried, and that needs to have a "stop and waste" valve on the low end(s), so it does not freeze water and break the pipes.
The watering lines that go the length of your beds or boxes are above the ground, held about 3" up by short pieces of 2 X 4 on edge with 2 nails holding the pipe in place. See Chapter 16 of the book The Mittleider Gardening Course - www.growfood.com. That chapter is even available FREE for you to study. Just click on the book and you'll have the opportunity to read that chapter.
In the fall, after your garden is finished, just unscrew the pipes from the ball valves and remove them from the garden.
