[MittleiderMethodGardening] Oranges on sale at local store/ unexpected learning from Foundation material
The past few months I am reading many of Dr. Mittleider's books and watching the video training. I want to improve my home gardening skills for the coming year. I found out this past month, the information is helpful even if shopping at the store for fresh fruits and veggies!
During the holidays, my wife was shopping for food. She purchased a bag of oranges. At home, she put them in a bowl on the table with other foods for snacking. As we sitting talking, we ate an orange. As we were remove the rind from an orange to eat, she said, "I wonder why they sold them at such a good price?" Without thinking, I replied, "Sulfur Deficiency." She looked at me odd and said "What?". I continued, "See the thick rind and the misshapen fruit. Those are signs of sulfur definciency in the trees which need more sulfur added to the soil. These orangers were sold cheaper because corp was not first rate" She replied, "How on earth do you know that?" I stopped and thought about it. Two weeks earlier, I was reading about Micronutrient in the book Food for Everyone. The part of the illustrations on topic of Sulfur has some pictures of Oranges.(I am surprised I remembered it. We live in Ohio. I can not grow Oranges here. So I did not focus on learning the details about oranges.)
Besides learning to grow a better garden, the Food for Everyone Foundation's teaching materials are making be me a better shopper for fresh produce. The down side is my wife is wanting me with shopping to help select the fresh produce!
Happy New Year and all the best in the coming growing season,
Dale
