[MittleiderMethodGardening] Winter Gardening

I have lost the response from an earlier post but the essance was that
it was too cold for them to grow a winter Garden. The whole concept
of winter gardening requires quite a paradigm shift. We are far to
willing to dismiss it as not plausible. This is an error. Part of
winter gardening is the techniqes that one can use to create
micro-climates of higher zone levels. Two levels is easy to achieve
with the use of a greenhouse, plant covering material, raised beds and
plastic. In other cases one can use natural techniques such as laying
a 6 inch layer of horse manure and straw as a substrate with 6 to 8
inches of soil on top. Timed properly, the composting process
generates heat for the coldest weeks of the year. I would reccomend
researching the material by Elliot Coleman, the undisputed king of
winter gardening. Then overcome all of the doubts and give it a shot.
My first year was daily amazement at the successful rearing of a fine
winter garden against all of my false perceptions that it couldn't be
done.
