Dear Bryant - when I asked the same question, several folks said to use
concrete blocks. Not as pretty as cedar, but lasts forever (if you are
sure you want the beds in that particular location to last) and you can
sit on the edge to work. Next best answer was cedar. Another
consideration is using a garden scooter to do as much work as possible
sitting down, rather than bending over, since the beds can only be so
high (I think 3' was the max suggested by several folks and also on a tv
garden show. Good luck!
