RE: [MittleiderMethodGardening] Radio Show Link & Invitation to Participate - Friday night 9 Central Time
Jim, In West Virginia, where I was born, rather than a root cellar, we had
a spring house. It was dug into the north face of one of the hills (very
little in W VA is flat land) on the property, and it was used as storage
room and extra refrigerator. In early summer, when you milked the cows, the
milk went into the spring house, and it was cold enough to drink and taste
good - not ice cold, but better than just cool. There were shelves that
home-canned fruits and vegetables went onto, and potatoes, carrots and other
root crops were packed in boxes with damp sawdust and "there he kept her
very well." :) In cities, some people dig holes in the yard, bury
galvanized trash cans, and use sawdust or straw to pack vegetables in them.
The lid goes on, and dirt is piled over the top. Usually you drill some
holes in the bottom and sides of the can to allow for drainage and some
transfer of air. Bernie
