[MittleiderMethodGardening] Questions about sustaining a family and watering with irrigation
We are building a home and will be irrigating the yard. Is is wise to irrigate the garden as well and if so, how would I do that without flooding everything?
How many rows do I need to feed my family of 6 for a year without going to the grocery store for any produce? (Trying to plan my garden space at the new house.)
Julievar2000 & Group:
Irrigating a vegetable garden is certainly feasible. You just need to build it so that the water is directed into the soil-beds, and doesn't get wasted in the aisles. And the beds need to be level(1-2" maximum drop in 30') so that water advances slowly, rather than running quickly through the beds and taking fertilizers, soil, seeds, and seedlings with it.
With good crop management such as re-planting multiple crops and growing high-yielding and high value crops, and by starting seedlings in a seed-house, and by preserving/drying/root-cellar storing your crops, you can grow food for a large family on less than 1/10th of an acre. The Files section has articles I've written giving possible yields.
