[MittleiderMethodGardening] beds for sweet corn

My block grow boxes are still doing wonderful but for growing sweet corn and many other vegetables for the fall garden my husband decided to till a big section of our one acre lots. We would like this time to build low growing boxes with wood creating a garden similar to one on the cover of the book the Mittleider Gardening Course. Now that I am ready to design the garden I have a question.....I am still going to build grow beds in the low boxes but how do I calculate the size of the boxes? If each grow beds inside the box are 18" wide do i still spaces them 3' 1/2"? Corn need to be closer to pollinate, if i want to make 6 rows of corn do i still leave that much space? thank you

Mondosug & Group:

Most Mittleider gardens are grown right in the dirt. However, if you are going to build boxes we recommend they be filled with sawdust and sand, etc, and NOT dirt.

We recommend Grow-Boxes be 18" wide OR 4' wide - and nothing in between works as well as those two. The 18"-wide boxes are for 2 rows of most crops or 1 row of large (like zucchini) and climbing crops.

Four-foot-wide boxes are used for 4 rows of most crops and 2 rows of large and climbing crops.

We recommend 3 1/2' aisles between 18" boxes, and at least 4' aisles on 4'-wide boxes.

We plant corn 8" apart in 2 rows in 18" boxes and 4 rows in 4'-wide boxes. Pollination is not a problem .
