Ammonium Nitrate is prime material for manufacture of improvised explosives, so the Feds have clamped down on it. There are many sources of nitrogen, including urine. A friend of mine mad a bomb from urine in prison camp in WWII in the Philippines.

If you use Chicken manure, watch out for nematodes. Around here at least all the chickens are infected and the manure needs to be composted at high temps to kill them.
