Top bar hives are cheap (50$ in wood and deck screws/nails depending on what you
buy) and easy to make and manage. If your looking for an inexpensive suit i
recommend you get just the face cover and buy a tyvek painter suit, your local
renal place usually has these. We have never used the smoker we purchased, it
actually is hanging on the wall in the living room as a decoration. You will
definitely want a hive tool though bees sometimes glue things together where you
need to cut or break away to look at or correct mismade comb, it is
indespensible. Bee brush can be usefull also.

Your best bet is to find a local bee keeping club and someone to buddy up with
for a few sessions ;). I suspect your a little late to be getting bees now
though since everyone pretty much everyone already has them ordered and will be
hiving their packages any time now. You may have to do a significant amount of
searching to find a package/queen this time of year.

There's an organic beekeeping list here on yahoo that is pretty decent if you
can stand the occasional bickering and differences of strong opinions that
sometimes need to get reigned in. I followed it a few years and gleaned a lot
of useful information and guidance. Unfortunately most of them are in warmer
areas than me and didn't have much help in the way of surviving the cold and
wet. I'm In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
