[Organic_Gardening] Re: rotten bottomed tomatoes

Thankyou guys for all the responses. I'd say it was blossom end rot. This is actually a new vegie patch so there haven't been tomatoes in the same bed the previous year as suggested BUT the soil isn't the greatest yet and will continue to have organic matter added to it to improve that moisture retention. I hadn't mulched because all the plants were planted closely enough to shade the ground from the hot sun; I've also had some problems with water not getting through mulch in the past. The problem has disappeared since posting so it's another indicator of BER, having happened at the beginning of the season as the website link suggested. Also we've had hot dry spells, some days up to 45 degrees celcius (don't know what that is in fahrenheit!) so that would be a contributing factor, as well as some irregular watering (which was basically when I missed a day or two during the heat wave occasionally; the soil really needs improving I think).
Thanks again for the help, I know how to prevent future occurences now.

Beth
