This might sound a little odd, but composting is one of my favorite parts of gardening. Saving all my veggie scraps and combining them with yard waste and watching it become rich, black compost--magic! And no matter what kind of soil you have, it will be improved by compost.

The gardeners.com article mentioned by Debra is a good one. The only thing I would add is don't worry if you can't get the right ratio of "greens" to "browns". During the spring and summer, I have lots of green stuff to add to the compost--grass clippings, especially. But the browns don't show up until the leaves fall in, well, Fall. :) Oh well! I layer as best I can, and try to get things mixed up somewhat when the leaves are available. It works! Oh, and get as much coffee grounds as you can. I used to work near a restaurant that saved all their coffee grounds for me; it was great!

Happy composting!
