[MittleiderMethodGardening] Preparation of Garden for Winter

Jim, since joining your gardening group, my knowledge on gardening has grown 10 fold..... l've just purchased your offer of 5 bags discounted Micro-Nutrients (Hurry folks! They're going fast!! - jk), but l do have one question.

We're approaching fall into winter here in Pa....zone 6.... l planned on tilling my gardens over for fall, what could you recommend as far as preparing the soil for winter.. should l give it a shot of your weekly recipe... before winter ???... or can you enlighten me on how to prepare the soil any better for winter.

As usual l pull all my dead plants and let em dry out prior to tilling under.... can you suggest any other ideas for winter preparations ????

l would like to commend you on your work and guidance Jim... you've been a guiding light to so many in gardening.... god bless, and many thanks again... Bryan Gliem

Bryan & Group:

Thanks for the kind words.

It is wise to do a final thorough weeding of the entire garden, including the aisles, in the fall. Otherwise the weeds will get a giant head start in the spring when it's too cold and/or muddy for you to get into the garden.

Tilling the beds will accomplish the weeding there.

We do NOT recommend you apply Pre-Plant or Weekly Feed in the fall. Some would be lost to leaching or volatilization, some will become "fixed" or adhered to the soil particles and thus unavailable to the plants, and some will become food for weeds.

It's best to apply the fertilizers just before planting.

If your plants are free of diseases and bugs it is best to till them into the soil immediately. That way the maximum nutrition gets back into the soil. Don't wait until they are dried out, as some nutrition will be lost by that time.

If there is ANY problem with bugs or diseases in the plant residue they should be totally removed from the garden immediately, and burned or disposed of off the property.
