Hi Dave ! 

Living in Wales -- it rains a lot -- slugs like rain! 

Gardeners hate slugs -- that includes me -- we get all the colours going black, brown and beige and lots of them.

So I won't get squeamish about you popping beetles with your fingers, if you don't get squeamish about me cutting in half any slug I find.  Damp evenings see me patrolling the garden with a large pair of scissors in my hands.

BTW if you use this technique, remember to store your scissors open -- because the goo the slugs exude is like superglue.
