Re: [Organic_Gardening] Japanese Beetles

Hello Organic Gardeners,

Earlier in the week, my roses were being decimated by very hungry JBs. Now they are standing tall, rose buds and new leaves are appearing without blemishes, and the JBs are gone despite the scorching heat in the NEast. I used diatomaceous earth, although I think I might have applied it incorrectly at first. After reading the instructions on the package, I decided to place the powder in a spray bottle along with some water. Once diluted completely, I sprayed all the remaining leaves and stems with the spray and immediately the JBs vanished. Later that evening, I noticed some of them had returned. So I decided to sprinkle the powder all over the bushes and all around the ground underneath.

Results: after three days, the JBs have not returned and the microscopic ants destroying one of my cumumber plants are gone. The remaining cucumber plants are green and strong, with no more browning taking place.

Variables: although, on the surface it seems the DE has worked on both the JBs and the ants, the scorching heat hovering over much of the Northeast might have some effect on both the JBs and the ants not going out to eat. Also, in the next few days, we are expecting some rain (which will wash away the DE) and cool things a bit. I'll know more next week.

My next experiment will be Cheryl's recipe listed below. I'm planning on using this recipe on the JBs that are trying to devour several Witch's Brooms around the property as well as on the roses, if they return. I'll let you all know the results.

Have a good weekend everybody. Stay cool.
