I haven't tried trellising with honey dew, but I do with my cantaloupe. The varieties I've grown show in increase in veining as they ripen, however, I mostly go by stem slip to determine if they are ripe. I've never had great luck with figuring how ripe honey dew are. I just guess and take my chances.
My nylons are tied so the melon doesn't fall to the bottom of the toe. That way I still can see a bit of the melon as it grows.
Love, Linn B (aka Smart Red) Gardening in zone 4b-5a, newly 5b? -- anyway, I'm still in the same spot in south-est, central-est Wisconsin
