[MittleiderMethodGardening] Re: Jim, l need help quickly, tomato plants are bending over
I've found that some indeterminate varieties have heavy foliage, extremely prone to suckering, and are very difficult to manage even with more than 9" spacing.
For next year try:
Amish Paste (heirloom). They have huge fruit and hardly have any suckers. They'll keep growing past the top of an 8' T-frame or pole unless you pinch them off. It's a decent eating tomato but it's great for canning. The foliage is sparse so air can get through, reducing the chances of blight. I'm in NC and haven't had problems with sun scald although most of the fruit isn't shaded. A tomato cage wouldn't do any good for these since the young stems are weak.
Debaro Plum (heirloom)
These have small fruit and the stem end tends to ripen much slower than the rest of the fruit. Hardly any suckers and they also want to get very tall. My wife hates them because the Amish Paste are so much faster and easier to process.
